A new phenomenon I've become aware of is the compost toilet. If it's done properly it's fine (especially in a rural setting), but I think most people are probably too stupid and lazy to do it properly in an urban setting. Additionally, if more people were introduced to the concept of urogenital myiasis, the demand for compost toilets in the developed world would essentially evaporate. Now who wants to go camping?

I first heard of the compost toilet in Alaska. Evidently they are starting to use these things in the woods and in the bush. Makes sense when you're off the grid, though...way better than a honey bucket. :)

Yes, way better than a bucket. There is also less risk of mechanical transmission of disease by filth flies in a place like Alaska both because the population probably isn't a significant reservoir for things like typhoid and also because it's so cold all the time.
